The purpose of Peace-Tohickon Evangelical Lutheran Church is to come together, live a Christian life and carry Jesus Christ into the community through acts of caring, witness and love

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

    February is full of opportunity!

Leap Day: There never seems to be enough time… but this month we get an extra day! Leap day is a way to correct our calendar, to make up for the fact that we have short changed our year for the last three years; a kind of temporal repentance, so that we can get back on track.

What would you do with an extra day? If God permitted you one day beyond your destined allotment, how would you use it? Leap day gives us the opportunity to remember that every day is a gift. As Jesus said in the sermon on the mount, "can any of you … add a single hour to your span of life?" (Matthew 6:27).

Leap year gives us the opportunity to take a moment and reevaluate how we are using all of our days.

St. Valentine's Day: A chance to remember and celebrate the power of love to change lives. According to legend, the original St. Valentine was a sort of premarital Santa Clause, anonymously leaving gifts of financial dowries at the homes of poor girls, so that they could wed. His was a self-giving love, which met the needs of others without any expectation of repayment. Who do you know that needs to know that they are loved? Sure, we can focus on hearts and flowers, but there are many kinds of love and many, many ways to show it.
Valentine's day gives us the opportunity to express love to those who may not expect it!

Lent: A word that means "Spring" and marks the penitential season before the resurrection to new life at Easter. Forty days to remind us of the forty days of rain during the great flood (Genesis 7); forty years of wandering in the wilderness (Exodus 16:35 & Numbers 14:34); forty days on the mountain top receiving the law (Exodus 24:18); forty years of King David's reign (2 Samuel 5:4); forty days of the fasting by Elijah before he encounters God on Mt. Horeb (I Kings 19:8); and of course the 40 days of fasting that inaugurated Jesus's ministry, when he faced Satan in the wilderness (Mark 1:13).

Like preparing the soil and planting the seed for a fruitful garden, Lent is a time of turning the soil of our hearts, removing the stones, and making ourselves ready so that the Word of God can take a firm root in our lives. The traditional Lenten disciplines of self- examination and repentance, prayer and fasting, sacrificial giving and works of love, are not meant to be punishment, but opportunities to grow in our awareness of God's continual presence and love around us and within us.

Lent gives us the opportunity to nurture our faith!

In Christian love,

Pastor Sellers

SERVICE SUNDAYS

The theme for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is “God’s Work, Our Hands!”   But fitting service into our busy lives can be a challenge.  Many of us find ourselves torn between spending time with the family and volunteering.  Others discover that many volunteer opportunities require a time commitment that makes it hard to serve.

Service Sundays are an opportunity once each month to put your hands to God’s work.

Service Sunday is a monthly opportunity for people of all ages to reach out with the love of Christ on behalf of our neighbors.  No long-term or on-going commitment is required, just one afternoon.

Each activity is a stand-alone event.
You do not need to commit to a year of service, just an hour or two!
Feel free to bring your family.
Service Sunday opportunities are appropriate for all ages.

February Service Sunday
Valentine Delivery to Shut-ins
February 12

Help share the love of God with some of our elder members.  After our marriage renewal, volunteers will be assigned to a team and receive directions to a shut-in member to visit.  Each team will be provided with a card and small gift to take with them.
Volunteers of all ages are welcome!

Join us ~ You'll be glad you did!

"Our talents are the gift that God gives to us...
What we make of our talents is our gift back to God"
