This class prepares the youth to become confirmed members
of the church. Confirmation
Class Schedule Fall 2010 – Spring 2011
There
will be assignments between classes, and students will be expected to make up
for missed classes so post this schedule where you can see it. The
2010-2011 Confirmation program will focus on The Small Catechism written by
Martin Luther. This covers the
basics of the Christian Faith including the Lord’s Prayer, the Ten
Commandments, the Apostle’s Creed and the two sacraments, Holy Communion and
Baptism. Typically
classes are held on alternate Wednesdays for one hour.
This is barely enough time to cover the material that we need to get to,
so please post the schedule where you can see it, and arrive on time prepared
for class. The class will try not to
waste your time, if you try not to waste ours. The
“retreat” days are January 17 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day) and February 21
(Presidents Day) which are both days off from school.
Each of these retreats will be focused on one of the sacraments, and it
will be our only opportunity to cover this material, so attendance is really
important. There will be some
fun activities on these days too. We will be looking for parent volunteers to
accompany us on our Faith in Action activities during these days.
The
Bear Creek retreat is often remembered as a highlight of the confirmation years
at Peace. We will include
other congregational youth as there is room for them, but participation is
required for the confirmation students. Please
note that in addition to regular Sunday morning worship, confirmation students
are expected to participate in worship on Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and
Good Friday as well as helping at the Easter Egg Hunt.
Christmas Eve attendance is encouraged, but we recognize that many
families have traditions that accommodate the schedules of various relatives,
and may find attendance a real hardship. For
that reason it is not required. Participation
in Sunday School is expected, as is participation in worship leadership as an
acolyte, crucifer, lector, or member of the choir.
Youth group activities are not required, but can be a lot of fun! Only
one event on the schedule is marked as optional (the CROP Walk for hunger) that
means that everything else is NOT optional, including the retreat days and the
Bear Creek retreat. You are getting
this schedule well in advance so that you can plan other activities around this
schedule. Legitimate excuses (medical necessity or death of a family member for
example) will be accepted with a parental note and make up work. Confirmation
classes need to be a priority. Remember, Pastor Sellers LOVES questions. Ask, and she will either answer right away, research and get back to you, or ponder the mystery with you. In any case, the better the question, the more she will want to reward you!
