Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Expect the unexpected… The holy week begins with crowds rejoicing at Jesus arrival in Jerusalem. With the ancient version of "rolling out the red carpet" they greet him with shouts of "Hosanna!" - which literally means "save us!"

But soon it becomes clear that Jesus is not going to fight the Roman occupation, or even the corrupt temple leadership, in the way that was expected. He is not going to take up arms against the oppressors. The crowd turns against him and changes their shouts to "Crucify him!"

The disciples watch in horror as Jesus is arrested, tried, condemned, tortured, subjected to public humiliation, and killed. And yet, this utter and complete destruction of Jesus, made final with the sealing of the tomb, is not what it seems.

We reenter the sacred drama year after year. We know what each of the players will do. We have heard it all before. The plot twists, but like a familiar country road, we know each turn.

Yet each year the story is different, because we are different. If we become parents, we suddenly notice Mary at the edge of the crowd, or remember Abraham and Isaac, and our understanding becomes deeper. When the previous year has held some tombs, literal or figurative, and we have mourned great losses, our longing for the joy of resurrection grows more profound. If our relationship with God has grown through scripture study, or a more committed prayer life, the story becomes our story in surprising new ways.

As we begin, once again, to tell the old, old story this holy week, I pray that you will discover the remarkable and unexpected transformational power there can be in coming fresh to what we think we already know. After all, early that Sunday morning, when the women went to the tomb, they knew just what they would find… didn't they?

In Christian love,

Pastor Sellers

SERVICE SUNDAYS

The theme for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is “God’s Work, Our Hands!”   But fitting service into our busy lives can be a challenge.  Many of us find ourselves torn between spending time with the family and volunteering.  Others discover that many volunteer opportunities require a time commitment that makes it hard to serve.

Service Sundays are an opportunity once each month to put your hands to God’s work.

Service Sunday is a monthly opportunity for people of all ages to reach out with the love of Christ on behalf of our neighbors.  No long-term or on-going commitment is required, just one afternoon.

Each activity is a stand-alone event.
You do not need to commit to a year of service, just an hour or two!
Feel free to bring your family.
Service Sunday opportunities are appropriate for all ages.

Join us ~ You'll be glad you did!

"Our talents are the gift that God gives to us...
What we make of our talents is our gift back to God"
