Dear Brothers and Sisters
in Christ,
I can imagine St. Paul looking down from heaven, and shaking his head at
the foolish human race. What must he think of our annual practice of
setting New Year’s Resolutions? In a random telephone survey of 1012
Americans, conducted by business writer Stephen Shapiro and Opinion
Research Corp. of Princeton N.J., only 8% of Americans say they achieve
their New Year’s resolutions.
It isn’t that we don’t know what we ought to do, or sincerely want to
do it. The problem is that "knowing", and even "wanting
to", are not the same as "doing." My grandmother used to
say, "If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride." Saint
Paul wrote in his letter to the Romans, "I can will what is right,
but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not
want is what I do." (Romans 7:19)
Paul says that if we are not choosing our actions, we are being controlled
by something else. We may have different names for them, but gluttony,
sloth, anger and greed are still the primary themes of resolution making.
That something else Paul is talking about is sin. Sin, he says, has
enslaved us, and like it or not, we are obedient to our unwanted and
invisible masters. Yikes!
So, if we are slaves, is our situation hopeless? Should we just give in
and accept our fate? By no means! God has seen our bondage to sin, and has
entered our material, hum-drum, every-day world, in order to set us free.
We are not freed by an annual shoring up of our will-power, (we have ample
evidence that THAT doesn’t work!), but by a daily return to our baptism.
We admit that we are in bondage to sin, and cannot free ourselves, and we
turn to the one who can and does free us. Confession and repentance, daily
recognition of our dependence on God, and the existence of divine power
that is stronger than our sin: This is where our hope and help can be
found.
We are as Luther said, both saint and sinner, and we will continue to have
our dual nature until God’s work in us is done. Yet, as we continually
remember our baptism, and rest in our relationship with God, the fruits of
the Spirit begin to show in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
(Galatians 5:22-23) Sin loses it’s terrible grip on us.
Shapiro suggests that, instead of a resolution, we choose a theme for the
year. Which fruit of the Spirit do you want to see more in your life? I
know just where you can find it…

SERVICE
SUNDAYS
The
theme for the
Evangelical
Lutheran
Church
in
America
is “God’s Work, Our Hands!” But fitting service into
our busy lives can be a challenge. Many of us find ourselves torn
between spending time with the family and volunteering. Others
discover that many volunteer opportunities require a time commitment
that makes it hard to serve.
Service Sundays are an
opportunity once each month to put your hands to God’s work.
Service
Sunday is a monthly opportunity for people of all ages to reach out with
the love of Christ on behalf of our neighbors. No long-term or
on-going commitment is required, just one afternoon.
Each activity is a stand-alone event.
You do not need to commit to a year of service, just an hour or
two!
Feel free to bring your
family.
Service Sunday
opportunities are appropriate for all ages.
Our
next Service Sunday outreach activity will be on Sunday November
13th
"One
House at a Time"
http://www.ohaat.org/
We
will be helping the staff deliver beds to those in need in the
Philadelphia area. We are also looking for donations of linens for these
beds. Please
consider donating new or gently used twin sheets/blankets/comforters and
NEW pillows/mattress pads or covers.
A collection box will be in the Narthex for these linens.
Join
us ~ You'll be glad you did!

talents are the gift that God gives to us...
What we make of our talents is our gift back to God"
